Designing Technical Systems as Social Systems

چکیده

Technical systems are intuitively understood as rather different from organizations. Yet, this holds merely for their implementation. It appears to be very convenient to consider technical systems as ’automated’ social systems. The first results of a research project, investigating the benefits of this ’social stance’ towards technical systems, are reported upon in this paper. Two example technical systems are investigated: an automatic teller machine and an elevator control system. The benefits of taking the social stance for the architectural design of these systems are demonstrated by applying the LAP-based DEMO methodology. The conclusion is that taking the social stance a design is produced that is fully independent of any implementation, including ICT related, issue. This is a great benefit for (re)designing and (re)engineering technical systems.

Designing and Modeling a Control System for Aircraft in the Presence of Wind Disturbance (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This paper proposes a switching adaptive control for trajectory tracking of unmanned aircraft systems. The switching adaptive control method is designed to overcome the wind disturbance and achieve a proper tracking performance for control systems. In the suggested system, the wind disturbance is regarded as a finite set of uncertainties; a controller is designed for each uncertainty, and a per...

Modelling infrastructures as socio-technical systems

The conceptualization of the notion of a system in systems engineering, as exemplified in, for instance, the engineering standard IEEE Std 1220-1998, is problematic when applied to the design of socio-technical systems. This is argued using Intelligent Transportation Systems as an example. A preliminary conceptualization of socio-technical systems is introduced which includes technical and soci...

Behavioral Considerations in Developing Web Information Systems: User-centered Design Agenda

The current paper explores designing a web information retrieval system regarding the searching behavior of users in real and everyday life. Designing an information system that is closely linked to human behavior is equally important for providers and the end users.  From an Information Science point of view, four approaches in designing information retrieval systems were identified as system-...

A Socio-Technical Perpective on the Design of IT Architecture: the lowland Lens

The paper aims at developing a more comprehensive design theory for designing effective IT architectures based on organizational design principles. It builds on the sociotechnical systems design theory (STS-D) for the design of work, workplaces and organizations as developed in the Lowlands (The Netherlands and Belgium). Traditional sociotechnical approaches study the effects of the technical s...

A hierarchical approach for designing the downstream segment for a supply chain of petroleum production systems

Strategic decisions in a supply chain are the most important decisions for petroleum production systems. These decisions, due to high costs of transportation and storing, are costly and affected by the tactical and operational decisions in uncertain situations. In this article, we focus on designing a downstream segment for a supply chain of petroleum production systems. For this purpose, we wi...
